BRUSSELS, March 31 (Reuters) – The European Commission said on Tuesday there is no evidence that a drug promoted by United States President Donald Trump as a possible cure for COVID-19 is effective against the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
– –
Trump had said that hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug, could radically change “the history of medicine” because of its possible effects against COVID-19.
– –
“The efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in treating patients with COVID-19 has not been proven to date,” a spokesman for the European Commission said Tuesday, conveying an internal opinion from the European Medicine Agency.
– –
The spokesperson added that there is also no evidence of the positive effects of chloroquine, another antimalarial drug, which is also being tested for possible use against COVID-19.
– –
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last week put hydroxychloroquine on the list of protected medical resources after Trump signed a decree to prevent its hoarding and price increase.
