“EU Relations with China Hinge on Russian Withdrawal from Ukraine, says European Head of Diplomacy”

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that relations between the European Union and China will not develop normally if Beijing does not convince Russia to leave Ukraine. He called the conflict in Ukraine existential for Brussels.

“EU relations with China will not develop normally unless China convinces Russia to leave Ukraine. Life is complicated. If we don’t like their behavior, we can’t be good friends,” Mr. Borrell said following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Stockholm (quoted from TASS).

According to the head of European diplomacy, the EU has two strategic security problems related to China. This is the conflict in Ukraine and the situation around Taiwan. Another problem he called unbalanced trade relations between Brussels and Beijing. According to Mr. Borrell, the EU has a dependence on China for digital transformation, which is “more than dependence on Russia for carbon fuel.”
