BRUSSELS – European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Josep Borrell recognizes double standards in international relations.

The admission came after being asked in an interview why the EU is far more willing to support the people of Ukraine than the people of Gaza.

“The Middle East conflict is not in the hands of the EU,” he said, pointing to the United States (US) as Israel’s main supporter.

“We are often criticized for double standards. But international politics is largely about the application of double standards. We don’t use the same criteria for all problems,” he told El Pais newspaper, as quoted on Thursday (11/8/2022).

Earlier in the interview, Borrell said supporting Kiev against Moscow was a “moral imperative” for Western countries.

“Solving the situation with people trapped in open prisons, where Gaza is, is not in the hands of the EU,” the senior EU diplomat said.

He called the slum living conditions in Gaza “scandalous” and “shameful,” but would not draw back to the origins of the humanitarian crisis.

Gaza is under an Israeli blockade, which it claims is the only way to contain the threat of Palestinian fighters, who hold sway in the area.
