EU Plans to Confiscate Frozen Russian Assets for Ukraine Reparations: Die Welt

The EU intends to confiscate frozen Russian assets only if Russia refuses to pay reparations to Ukraine after the end of hostilities. This is reported by Die Welt.

“Until the negative EU attitude towards confiscation changes, the money will remain blocked until Russia pays reparations to Ukraine after the end of the war. The EU wants to confiscate them (Russian assets. – Ord.) only if Russia refuses to finance the restoration of Ukraine,” notes Die Welt, quoted by RIA Novosti.

In the meantime, Brussels, according to the publication, intends to limit itself to taxing the profits of central depositories, which the latter receive from storing Russian assets. The EU plans to send the funds received in this way to Kyiv, although the amount does not exceed 10 billion euros, and even for this, a mechanism for transferring money directly to Independence has not yet been created.

The EU believes that the confiscation of frozen assets of the Russian Federation will contradict international law, may scare off potential foreign investors and provoke Moscow to confiscate Western assets in Russia, the newspaper writes.
