EU Parliament Approves Fully Online ‘Single Visa’ Process for Schengen Countries

The European Union (EU) Parliament has approved plans to make the ‘single visa’ process for Europe’s Schengen countries fully online. Visa to visit Schengen countries can now be applied for online. The change comes after a months-long legislative process. The new system will enter into force three weeks after its publication in the Administrative Gazette of the European Union.

Digital visa applications will speed up the process and reduce costs. Schengen visa is a visa facility that allows you to visit 27 European countries including Switzerland, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary and Austria with a single visa. These 27 countries can be visited and resided in for a certain period of time. The procedures to obtain a current Schengen visa are tough. If the documents are not correct, the application is more likely to be rejected.

Online Visa System

The online visa system will simplify the Schengen visa application process for travelers. People applying for this visa need to upload electronic copies of their travel documents along with biometric information. Fees must be paid online. First-time applicants or those with new passports or updated biometric data may be required to attend a personal interview for additional verification.

Applicants will receive a cryptographically signed barcode after verifying the information provided and getting approval from the authorities. It can be captured or stored digitally. Some countries such as Australia already have online visa systems linked to an individual’s passport.
