European Union officials are scheduled to discuss the topic of Ukraine’s membership on Wednesday (9/3) time in Versailles, France. Although they have not been able to determine membership, they have agreed to establish more intense communication with Ukraine.
“But the question is whether they will find a deal or [diskusi] will widen,” said one of the European Union officials who asked not to be named ReutersWednesday (9/3).
Previously, the European Union promised to immediately discuss Ukraine’s membership application amid the Russian invasion. European Council President Charles Michel said his side was on the side of Ukraine to alleviate humanitarian suffering.
“We will discuss the application for Ukraine’s membership in the next few days,” Michel said via his official Twitter account, last Monday.
“The EU’s unprecedented solidarity, friendship and assistance to Ukraine is unshakable,” he said.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also conveyed the same thing via a tweet about a telephone conversation with Michel. He said the discussions with the European Union also touched on the security of nuclear facilities which Russia threatened to control.
“Talk about threats to nuclear facilities, shelling of civilian and critical infrastructure. We have to stop this. Raise the issue of Ukraine’s membership in the EU. The Ukrainian people deserve this. Stop Russia,” Zelensky wrote.
