The European Union published the decision on the entry of Bulgaria and Romania into Schengen by air and water. It says it will become official on March 31.
“From March 31, 2024, checks on persons at the internal air and sea borders with and between the two countries are abolished. The provisions of the Schengen acquis apply to Bulgaria and Romania in their relations with each other and in their relations with Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, as well as with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland,” the EU decision reads.

It also states that the Council “is working towards a decision to abolish checks on persons at internal land borders”, recalling that it can only be taken unanimously.
“National short-term residence visas issued by Bulgaria and Romania before March 31, 2024, remain valid for the purposes of transit through the territory of other member states or for a planned stay on their territory that does not exceed 90 days within each 180 -day period, insofar as they have recognized these short-term residence visas for these purposes in accordance with Decision No. 565/2014/EU. The conditions set out in the said decision shall apply,” the document further states.
This Decision shall enter into force on the date of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
