EU, Norway and Switzerland condemn murder of journalist Cruz Solís

Mexico City. The delegation of the European Union and the embassies of Norway and Switzerland in Mexico “firmly” condemned the murder of journalist Mauricio Cruz Solís, which occurred on Tuesday of this week in Uruapan, Michoacán.

In a statement, these diplomatic offices stressed that this crime “shows the degree of violence and intimidation that many journalists face in Mexico and constitutes a threat to human rights.”

Given this, they urged the Mexican authorities to create favorable environments and protection so that communicators in the country can carry out their work freely, without putting their lives at risk and without threats.

Thus, they emphasized, it will prevent “zones of silence” from existing in Mexican territory where no defender or journalist dares to work.

“We take note that the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Michoacán has already opened an investigation into the events surrounding the murder of Mr. Cruz Solís, following the investigation protocol for crimes committed against journalists and human rights defenders.”

The delegation of the European Union and the embassies of Switzerland and Norway recognized the efforts of the authorities of our country to clarify the latest cases of murders of journalists, as well as to prevent them.

However, they reiterated their “great concern about the level of impunity in cases of defenders and journalists murdered in Mexico in previous years and our call for those responsible, both materially and intellectually, for all these murders to be identified and prosecuted.”

They called on federal, state and municipal authorities to continue making progress in the protection of communicators and human rights defenders through existing tools, such as the federal Protection Mechanism for these unions; as well as maintaining the fruitful dialogue with civil society through the working group created for its improvement.

“We reaffirm our availability to continue supporting Mexico with cooperation actions for the protection of human rights, the safety of human rights defenders and journalists, and the strengthening of justice procurement and administration services,” they stated. .

At the same time, they expressed their condolences and solidarity with the family and friends of the victim.
