EU: new sanctions on Iran for selling weapons to Russia

The foreign ministers of the European Union have approved sanctions against Iran for providing Russia with ballistic missiles to use against Ukrainein a Council in Luxembourg this Monday. Specifically, restrictive measures were approved against seven Iranian individuals and seven entities, the EU said in a statement.

The sanctions include individuals and entities responsible for the development and transfer of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), missiles and technology sent to Russia in support of its war against Ukraine, and groups and armed entities undermining peace and security in the Middle East and the Red Sea region.

In addition, the Council decided to impose restrictive measures on Iran’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Seyed Hamzeh Ghalandari, and senior officials of the Qods Force of the Aerospace Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as well as the general directors of the companies Aircraft Manufacturing Industries and Aerospace Industries. Organization. Companies on the list also include Iranian airlines Saha Airlines, Mahan Air and Iran Air.

Individuals and companies included on the list will be subject to asset freezes and travel bans to the EU. Likewise, the provision of funds or economic resources, directly or indirectly, to natural or legal persons, entities or organizations included on the list or for their benefit is prohibited.

These sanctions follow the statement made this Sunday in which the EU strongly condemned the recent transfer of Iranian-made ballistic missilesconsidered as a direct threat to European security.

The European Union’s support for Ukraine and its condemnation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Regarding military support from the EU, Josep Borrell, vice president of the European Commission, has presented a proposal to create a new fund with which the European Union will finance the shipment of weapons to Ukraine and thus circumvent the veto that Hungary has maintained it for a year and a half. Under Borrell’s idea, participation in this new fund will be voluntary, so that, from his point of view, Hungary would have no incentives to oppose its creation.

Similarly, the approval of the loan of up to 35 billion euros, which the EU is willing to provide to kyiv within the framework of the G7 agreement, which was announced last week, represents a favorable outlook for Ukraine.

On the other hand, it is expected that the European Union has found the legal basis to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. The IRGC has been accused on multiple occasions by the EU of leading a brutal crackdown on Iranian protesters, transferring weapons to Russia and launching ballistic missiles against Israel, as well as supporting militias across the Middle East. But for this designation to occur, a firm condemnation by one of the 27 member states is necessary for it to be put to a vote.
