EU member states will voluntarily limit gas consumption by 15 percent

“The most important thing is that today we have reached an agreement between the 27 member states to increase our resilience while at the same time remaining in solidarity with our neighboring countries,” said Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten (Groen) in “Het Journaal”.

“This is a very good thing for our Belgian families and companies. If we go to a reduction of 15 percent with the whole of Europe, it means that we will have no problems in the winter and that everything remains calm. We can also remain our neighboring countries help out.”

According to Van der Straeten, any gas shortage in Germany has been eliminated. “The German minister was very convincing. He said that they too have their winter plan ready, that they are recognizing the switch away from Russia and away from fossil fuels. This is an effort that we must make together with all countries.”

With the sky-high gas prices of recent months, we have already consumed 22 percent less gas, Van der Straeten adds.
