EU Member States’ veto rights should be waived / Article

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has stated that the veto rights of European Union (EU) member states on individual decisions should be abolished. In his view, it is unacceptable to block the actions of the Union of 27 because of the differing views of some Member States.

The nurse explains the position of Germany, the EU’s most influential country: “We can no longer be hostages to those who paralyze European foreign policy.”

The minister added that those who do “play with European cohesion”.

Therefore, in the Sister’s view, it is time to abandon such a veto, even if it would mean that Germany’s position on certain issues might not be supported.

The German Foreign Minister did not mention specific countries, but a number of foreign policy issues have recently been blocked by Hungary. Hungary, for example, has opposed an EU statement criticizing China’s actions in Hong Kong.

Last year, Hungary, as well as Poland, had threatened to veto the EU Economic Recovery Fund and the entire budget of the European Union in connection with proposals to link payments to the rule of law.
