The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, announced on Sunday February 27 that member states of the European Union (EU) were ready to supply combat aircraft to the Ukrainian armed forces, following the ongoing Russian military intervention in the country.

Following a meeting by videoconference with EU foreign ministers preceded by an interview with the head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Josep Borrell expressed himself in these terms: “Dmytro Kouleba said need planes that Ukrainians can fly. Some member states have such planes and we are going to supply them with other armaments necessary for a war.”

The Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, announced on February 28 during a press conference that her country would provide 25 million Canadian dollars (17.6 million euros) in military protective equipment to the Ukrainian army.

Canada had already made a first delivery of lethal military equipment and ammunition to Ukraine on February 14, at a cost of 7.8 million Canadian dollars.

On 27th February the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell announced that the Union would release 450 million euros to supply arms to Ukraine, as well as 50 million euros for “protective equipment and fuel.

Germany, for its part, decided on February 26 to deliver 1,000 rocket launchers, 500 Stinger-type surface-to-air missiles and “several” howitzers.

In the same vein, France also took the decision on the same day of “the additional delivery of defense equipment to the Ukrainian authorities as well as fuel support”.

The United States also authorized an aid package for Ukrainian forces in January, including $200 million worth of anti-armour weapons, grenade launchers, artillery and small arms in December 2021.

The United Kingdom, Poland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Lithuania also sent their own weapons.

The ongoing Russian military operation, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is aimed at defending the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, whose independence it has recognized, and at “demilitarizing” and “denazifying” Ukraine.
