EU Member States Reach Agreement to Reduce Waste by 5% in 2030

The plans are intended to reduce the European waste mountain. This continues to grow due to the ever-increasing number of disposable products and the success of online stores. The EU member states will now negotiate with the European Parliament, after which the rules can come into effect throughout the EU.

The environment ministers of the 27 member states agreed on Monday that at least 5 percent less waste must be produced in 2030 than in 2018. Five years later this must be 10 percent less and 15 percent in 2040. Ketchup sachets, chip containers and shampoo bottles for one shower will be phased out step by step, if it is up to the ministers. They also want to collect 90 percent of plastic bottles and cans by 2030 with a deposit.

The EU countries are willing to make a number of exceptions, for example for wine. The latter was necessary to get Italy, which had been difficult for a long time, on board. The ministers also want more time to implement the new rules. They can soon take a year and a half to do this, if it is up to them.
