EU Member States Discuss Proposed Sanctions on Russian Diamonds: Latest Updates

EU member states will begin discussions on the proposed 12th package of sanctions against Russia, the focus of which is the ban on imports of Russian diamonds, Reuters reported, citing European diplomats and high-ranking officials.

So far, the EU has imposed 11 packages of sanctions targeting many sectors of the economy and 1,800 people, organizations and companies.

However, the Russian state mining company “Alrosa” is not yet among those sanctioned, although quite a few large Western jewelers are boycotting Russian diamonds.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, told the Financial Times that the EU is received support from the G-7 member states for an embargo on Russian diamonds.

Discussions on the package will begin at the beginning of next week, and it is first expected to be approved by the European Commission and then by the Council of the EU. The proposal to be discussed was drawn up by Belgium.

Poland proposed in September an embargo on Russian diamonds and liquefied petroleum gas (propane-butane), and Estonia asked that liquefied natural gas be included in the package, although the EU does not want to create new difficulties in this market, according to Reuters, quoted by BTA .

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said recently that the EU plans to ban Russian diamonds, freeze assets and impose a travel ban on another 100 people linked to the Kremlin regime, as well as tighten compliance with the price ceiling on Russian petrol.
