EU Member States Approve New Law to Protect Journalists: Limiting Government Interference and Social Media Impact

Dec 15, 2023 at 10:46 PM Update: an hour ago

The member states of the European Union have approved a new law that should provide greater protection for journalists. The law will limit the grip of governments on journalism and better guarantee the rights of journalists.

The law was drawn up after journalists and media companies in a number of EU member states complained that they were being pressured by the government. This happened in Hungary and Poland, among others. In Greece, spy software was used to eavesdrop on journalists. The new law limits the extent to which governments can monitor journalists.

The law will also impact social media platforms. After the law has been introduced, they cannot simply remove content from journalists. Media companies must also become more transparent about their ownership and government advertising.

In October, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán criticized the law, which he said was “against freedom”. X owner Elon Musk “absolutely” agreed.

The law still needs to be officially approved by the member states and the European Parliament.
