The coalition to protect shipping traffic in the Red Sea against attacks was called Operation Prosperity Guardian and was created by the United States. Several European states had already pledged bilateral support for the US initiative, but Spain and Germany, among others, were in favor of an EU mandate for participation.
According to the US, the operation is necessary because trade ships have recently been regularly attacked by Yemeni Houthi rebels, who say they are protesting against Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
