EU Mandates ‘Battery Passport’ for All New Electric Cars, Providing Transparency on Battery Production and Origin

From February 2027, all new electric cars that will be sold on the territory of the European Union will have to create a “battery passport”. This tool is expected to provide much more transparency about exactly what went into the production of a given machine’s battery and where it came from.

These documents will be linked to the VIN number of the machine, but by scanning the QR code it will be possible to obtain information about the materials and their origin, as well as other information, including the capacity and condition of the batteries.

This is part of a wider change in the European Union’s regulations on electric car batteries. They provide that manufacturers will have to provide information on harmful emissions during the production process. Also, the amount of recyclable materials should be gradually increased in preparation for 2035, when only new electric cars can be sold in the European Union. The price of this document will be around 10 euros. It is true that not everyone will be able to see everything – car manufacturers will see the full picture in detail, while the car buyer will be offered a more general view with key information.
