EU Leaders Discuss Financial Assistance for Ukraine Amid Hungary’s Block

“Honestly, only Ukraine and Russia can talk about “fatigue”… In our countries, we can say that we are used to this war, but we are not tired. Our cities are not bombed, our citizens are not killed. Our only burden is regarding assistance to Ukraine “This is the reception of refugees and a certain reduction in comfort. We do not feel suffering,” the Czech leader noted.

At the same time, he noted, Europe will have serious problems if some politicians irresponsibly use inflation or rising energy prices to turn voters against aid to Ukraine.

“We must have the courage to tell our fellow citizens that helping Ukraine is in our interest,” Pavel noted.

Ukraine’s loss threatens security

In this context, the President of the Czech Republic expressed disappointment that Hungary’s position blocked the provision of financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros.

“If we believe that the war in Ukraine is an evil against the legal order, that it affects the foundations of our societies, we must support the country, whether we like it or not. Not out of love for Ukrainians, but to defend our way of life. If we let Russia to win, it will create a threat to our own security, our future,” Pavel said.

He believes that the sooner the issue of financial assistance to Ukraine is resolved, the better for everyone.

Messages from Peter Pavel about supporting Ukraine

On December 20, Peter Pavel met with French President Emmanuel Macron. During the meeting, the leaders discussed the war in Ukraine.

In the context of the meeting, the Czech leader noted that France and the Czech Republic are aware of the risks associated with Russia’s likely success in the war against Ukraine. This is why EU enlargement is an extremely important step.

Hungary blocking financial assistance to Ukraine from the EU

The European Union has prepared a financial support plan for Ukraine worth 50 billion euros for a period of four years. Of this amount, direct budget support will amount to 39 billion, 8 billion will go to the investment fund and another 3 billion to technical support.

EU leaders discussed the initiative at the European Council summit in Brussels on December 14. 26 countries supported the provision of funds to Ukraine, but Hungary vetoed this decision.

Budapest demands Brussels to unfreeze the 30 billion euro aid package for Hungary. The funds were blocked due to problems with the rule of law and bribery in the country.

The EU recently unfrozen 10 billion euros of this amount in exchange for the Hungarians agreeing not to block the start of accession negotiations for Ukraine. To unlock the remaining funds, Budapest must fulfill a number of conditions.
