Brussels –
European Union (EU) diplomats have approved new sanctions against Belarus for his role in supporting the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions range from economic sanctions to the cessation of the export of Belarusian goods to the European Union.
Reported by Reuters on Wednesday (2/3/2022), the French Presidency in the European Union said in a statement that the sanctions would cover a number of economic sectors. The president posted the statement on his Twitter account.
“(Sanctions on) some sectors of the economy, and in particular timber, steel and potash,” the French Presidency in the European Union said in a statement.
An EU official said that one of the goals of the new sanctions against Belarus is to stop further exports of Belarusian goods to the EU. Belarus has previously been subject to EU sanctions after President Alexander Lukashenko cracked down on protests after the August 2020 elections.
“These measures will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union to come into force,” the statement added, without specifying when the publication would be released.
A number of these new sanctions are expected to close the gap from the restrictive measures that have been imposed on Belarus.
The EU is known to have banned the export of potash, fertilizers made from potash, and oil products from Belarus. But diplomats say Belarus is still exporting potassium to the EU via Ukraine.
Belarus also known to increase its exports to the EU related to oil products obtained from coal.
