EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell proposed to EU defense ministers to train 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers in addition to previous plans in the coming months.
This was specified by the Russian edition of the BBC.
On Wednesday, after an informal meeting of EU defense ministers, Josep Borrell said that the EU’s program for a military assistance mission, under which EU countries were supposed to train 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers by the new year, would be implemented by the end of October . Now 25,000 Ukrainians have been trained.
“You know, I always say we need to do more and faster […] I still think we need to do more and faster, and I suggested to the ministers that we increase the task of this mission to 40,000 trained Ukrainian soldiers in the coming months,” the press service of his ministry quoted Borel as saying.
“It is also important to think about the changing needs of the Ukrainian army and work not only on quantity, but also on quality. Ukrainians need more specialized training for smaller groups and for the command staff,” added the head of EU foreign policy.
Borrell also said he had proposed to defense ministers a five-year plan for the EU’s military aid program to Ukraine, which EU leaders approved in principle at a summit in June. Borrell proposed that within this plan, the EU would set aside 5 billion euros per year for military aid to Ukraine in 2024-2027.
