EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kiev: Support for Ukraine, Historic Milestones, and Concerns over Russia’s Nuclear Missile Testing

Meeting of EU foreign ministers in Kiev. “A historic fact”, underlines Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. It is the first time that it is held outside the borders of the EU, true, but it is held in a country of future entry.” For Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani “Italy will continue to give Ukraine the highest priority during the Presidency Italian G7 membership throughout 2024 and 2025, when it will host the Conference for the Reconstruction of Ukraine”.

The EU is “determined” to support Ukraine “in the long term. On a military level, I have proposed a new bilateral multi-annual allocation, through the European Peace Facility, of up to 5 billion euros for next year. More will arrive : I hope that we will reach an agreement before the end of the year, with the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework.” Thus the EU High Representative Josep Borrell, at a press conference in Kiev at the end of the informal Foreign Affairs Council.

Russia could test or has already tested a nuclear missile. The New York Times writes this, according to which satellite images and aeronautical data suggest that Moscow “may be preparing to test an experimental nuclear-powered cruise missile – or may have recently tested one – with a theoretical range of thousands of miles”.
