EU: Faster and more effective return of migrants on the table –

Convergence of the EU’s interior ministers for the fastest and most efficient return of migrants was made clear after the meeting of the competent Council in Luxembourg.

The Commission is invited to present a legislative proposal on the issue with the processes underway, however, nothing clear is expected before the new House of Commissioners takes office.

The Schengen area is under a lot of migratory pressure, pointed out the minister of internal affairs of the Hungarian Council Presidency, Sándor Pinter, who added that “the resilience of the external borders” must be strengthened.

Returns more effective – Reduction of irregular migration

“Bad people shouldn’t be allowed into the EU and if they are, they should be sent back,” he said, with Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson reporting that while irregular immigration has fallen and returns are more effective, there doesn’t seem to be a drop in asylum applications.

“It is absolutely true that the refund system needs to be improved. Today it is divided,” said Nicole De Moor, Belgium’s Deputy Minister of Immigration and Asylum, emphasizing that “first of all, we need faster procedures for those who pose a security risk to our countries, and secondly, an obligation to cooperate with the authorities needs to be introduced.”

For his part, the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, emphasized that the matter “has already been put on the table, but we insist that returns must be discussed in the spirit of the European Pact and all provisions of European legislation, including Dublin. Therefore, yes to refunds, but within the framework that is already in place.”

“Return centers are not a proposal of either the Commission or the Hungarian Presidency”

Johansson and Pinder, when asked about discussions about “return centers” outside the EU, said that this was not a proposal of either the Commission or the Hungarian presidency.

What all sides are talking about is the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, which will come into force in 2026 with member states already proceeding with the necessary processes and preparations.

The next discussion on immigration will take place at the level of the heads of state-members next week at the Summit on 17 and 18 October.
