EU extends Ukrainian refugee protection program / Article

The official said the decision was made before the mass shootings in Ukrainian cities, but the attacks showed the importance of this step.

The annual program was activated on 4 March. Johanson has assured that it will be valid until at least March 2024.

The requirement that individuals be deprived of their temporary protection status after returning to their homeland has also been changed. Refugees need only inform national or local authorities of their return to Ukraine.

Temporary protection status is currently granted to 4.2 million Ukrainian citizens under the EU program. It guarantees them the right to live and work in any EU member state, as well as to receive support for housing and education.

So far, 7.6 million people have left Ukraine due to the war, while 4.2 million have returned to the country, according to United Nations Refugee Agency data.

CONTEXT:
