Sanctions against the Russian Federation for cyberattacks will be in effect for at least another year

Sanctions against organizers of hacker attacks from Russia, China, North Korea have been extended for another year.

The Council of the European Union extended the sanctions, which include, among other things, “cyber-sanctions” against the organizers of hacker attacks from Russia, China, North Korea against the European Union and its individual member countries. This is stated in an official statement made public on Monday on the website of the EU Council.

“Today, the Council decided to extend the complex of restrictive measures against (organizers – ed.) Cyberattacks that threaten the EU or its member countries for another year – until May 18, 2022,” the message says.

This set of measures allows the EU to impose targeted sanctions against individuals and organizations involved in cyberattacks. In addition, restrictions can be imposed in response to cyber attacks against third states or international organizations if such measures are deemed necessary to achieve the objectives of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.

Now the sanctions are in force against eight individuals and four legal entities and include freezing assets, financial transactions, as well as visa bans. In particular, we are talking about the restrictions against Russia, China and the DPRK, introduced in July last year due to the cyberattack against the OPCW, as well as the spread of the WannaCry, NotPetya and Operation Cloud Hopper viruses.

Recall a year ago for the first time in the EU decided to impose sanctions for cyberattacks… The intelligence services of Russia, China and the DPRK will fall under them. It was reported that were under restrictive measures the main center of special technologies of the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces and four Russians.
