EU countries sign deal on mandatory gas stocks until 2026 | Abroad

Countries that do not have their own storage capacity will have access to the reserves of other EU countries and will have to pay for their replenishment, the EU ambassadors have agreed.

There will also be mandatory certification in the EU for all storage system operators, to prevent “potential risks of external influences on critical infrastructure”, according to member states. Their deal has yet to be approved by the European Parliament.

After the supply of gas from Russia, the EU’s main supplier, became increasingly precarious after the invasion of Ukraine at the end of February, the European Commission proposed in March to maintain mandatory gas stocks in the EU, of at least 80 percent per 1 November and the winters after 90 percent. In the meantime, Russia has completely turned off the gas tap to Poland and Bulgaria. They are now supplied by their neighboring countries.
