Details: Under the treaty, countries such as Italy, which receive many migrants from the Mediterranean, can speed up asylum procedures and seek prompt assistance from EU counterparts, including financial assistance and resettlement.
Now the 27 EU member states will continue negotiations with the European Parliament. They hope that the migration system will be operational by the EU legislative elections in 2024.
Diplomatic sources told Reuters that Italy agreed to the agreement after removing some references to charities funded by Germany to help illegal migrants.
Poland and Hungary, which are strongly opposed to accepting any people coming from the Middle East and Africa, voted against the agreement, while Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia abstained, according to agency sources. The decision was made by a majority vote.
Previously, EU interior ministers were unable to reach an agreement on reform of the union’s migration policy due to Italy’s positionwhich expressed caution regarding the proposed option.
The dispute over the EU migration pact began in June, when it pre-approved by the interior ministers of the member states.
Last week, the European Parliament, due to lack of movement on the issue, announced that it would block other parts of negotiations on the planned reform. Delays in its introduction are particularly critical given the approaching elections to the European Parliament in June 2024.
