He stressed that all EU countries demonstrated a common determination to continue to provide Ukraine with all the necessary assistance, whether in the political, economic, humanitarian or military spheres.
“As I had the opportunity to convey last Thursday to President (Vladimir – ed.) Zelensky in Moldova, Spain will continue to work, as Sweden did, to help Ukraine on its path to the European Union,” Sanchez stressed.
He also added that Russia’s unjust and unjustified war against Ukraine has made the European Union aware of the need to move forward with the reforms that will be at the center of the European debate during the Spanish Presidency of the Council.
Ukraine’s accession to the EU
The invasion of the Russian Federation significantly accelerated the process of European integration of Ukraine. Already on the 5th day of the war, February 28, 2022, Ukraine officially applied for membership in the European Union.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insisted that Europe consider the application under a “special procedure” as soon as possible in light of the extreme circumstances faced by Ukraine.
Ukraine received the official candidate status on June 23, 2022, along with recommendations from the EU, the implementation of which became a prerequisite for moving on to the next stage – membership negotiations.
