EU countries and EP agree on reducing energy consumption by 11.7% until 2030

The members of the European Union (EU) will reduce their total energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030, according to an agreement reached on Friday between the countries of the bloc and the European Parliament.

“Saving energy is an important step to save the planet,” said European Commission (EC) Vice President Frans Timmermans.

“In recent months, Europeans have demonstrated that they are ready and able to meet this challenge, and our industry has demonstrated that it can optimize energy use and production processes,” Timmermans said.

This energy reduction goal, for which 2020 data is used as a reference value, will be binding on all EU countries.

To achieve this goal, each EU member state will have to additionally reduce energy consumption by an average of 1.49% per year from 2024 to 2030.

This is necessary to “encourage energy savings in end-use sectors such as buildings, industry and transport,” according to a press release.

If national efforts are not sufficient to achieve the target, the EC will be able to ask individual countries to increase energy saving.

This agreement still needs to be approved by the European Parliament and the EU member states in order for it to enter into force.
