Climate summit in Baku

The member states of the European Union have agreed on a common position at the climate summit in Azerbaijan next month. At COP29 in Baku, the EU will, among other things, call for limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees and will further call for “setting new, ambitious goals”.

“This ambitious but balanced text, agreed by the EU countries, will be the EU’s roadmap in Baku,” said Hungary, which is president of the Council of the European Union for six months.

“The EU will continue to play a leading role in international efforts to limit global warming, and will call for solidarity with vulnerable countries and communities in this joint struggle. Because climate change is not saving any country, region or region.”

Funding

The international climate conference in Baku (11 to 22 November) will discuss, among other things, the financing of climate measures. It was previously agreed that rich countries would provide at least 100 billion for climate finance until next year. Agreements must be made in Baku in the following years.

It was not easy for the EU to take a common position. For example, the Netherlands wanted to refer to nuclear energy as a way to achieve climate goals, but not all EU member states agreed with this. That is why nuclear energy is not mentioned.

Poland stopped the year 2040 from being named for achieving climate goals.
