Direct speech: “I have decided to stand in the European elections in 2024.”

Details: Michel announced his intention to leave office early and join the Belgian liberal party MR – Mouvement Réformateur (Reform Movement) in June to take part in the elections to the European Parliament.

In connection with the announced decision, Michel will leave the presidency of the European Council before the end of this year, when his mandate ends.

“At the end of June or beginning of July, the European Council will be able to anticipate this and decide on a successor,” he said.

At the same time, Michel did not specify what role he wants to play in the European Parliament.

“I want to serve where I can be useful. I have no other ambitions. I want to play an active role in the European debate and help advance the Europe 2030 project. This will require reforms,” Michel said.

It is noted that usually the role of President of the European Council goes to the leader of the country that will preside over the Council of the EU at that time. This period of time will fall during the presidency of Hungary, where the post of prime minister is occupied by Viktor Orban. At the same time, the final decision on who exactly will occupy the position of President of the European Council will be made by the leaders of the EU member states.
