“Due to the war with Russia, Ukraine is constantly facing various challenges, including economic difficulties,” said Edmunds Cepurītis, chairman of the Saeima’s European Affairs Commission, on Friday, March 1, emphasizing that the European Union (EU) is committed to providing Ukraine with all necessary support, including promoting opportunities market its products.
At the meeting, the Commission approved the national position on temporary trade liberalization measures for Ukrainian products. The previously introduced reliefs determine that until the beginning of June of this year, fruits and vegetables grown in Ukraine, as well as other agricultural products, are not subject to customs duty. The proposal envisages extending these benefits until June 6 of the following year.
The proposal also provides for an automatic safeguard mechanism that could be applied to limit imports of Ukrainian poultry meat, eggs and sugar to certain criteria. If the European Commission concludes that the import of these goods exceeds the average arithmetic level of the quantity imported in 2022-2023, then within 21 days it will be possible to re-determine the tariff quota for them.
Russia’s war of aggression has significantly reduced Ukraine’s ability to engage in global trade. At the meeting, the deputies emphasized that the economic recovery of Ukraine should be promoted, allowing it to earn money to endure the war. Continuation of such support will facilitate critical trade flows from Ukraine to the EU, preserving Ukraine’s trade opportunities with the rest of the world, so product group exemptions should be as narrow as possible.
In response to the MPs’ questions, the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that maintaining the state’s functionality in war conditions costs Ukraine almost three billion euros per month. Economic support is extremely important for it.
The Commission also expressed that the integration of Ukraine into the EU internal market is also promoted in this way.
