EU Commissioner urges to agree on a mandatory solidarity system for solving the migration crisis / Article / LSM.lv

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ilva Johansson, who will present a reform of the asylum system on new week, said on Saturday that Member States should agree on a mandatory solidarity system to tackle the migration crisis.

“It must be mandatory, all Member States must help if there is a situation where one Member State is under pressure, when there are a lot of people who need help,” the commissioner told AFP.

“But we also need to consider what help is needed,” she said.

“It’s not just about relocation, it could be other situations, like helping with return,” those whose asylum applications will be rejected in their home countries, she said.

Johansson did not want to reveal the details of the new Asylum and Migration Pact, which will be presented on September 23.

Developing a “proposal that would be accepted by all Member States and Parliament” is a “difficult task”, the commissioner said.

“My guess is that when I present my proposal, I will not have any ‘hurray, we won,'” Johansone said, while expressing the hope that it would be seen as a “real compromise.”

The Commissioner also called for the introduction of “much faster procedures” for examining asylum applications.
