The European Union said that the death in prison of a blogger from Pinsk, Nikolai Klimovich, confirms the outrageous human rights situation in the country, and called for immediate access to Lukashenka’s former opponent in the elections, Viktor Babariko.
As reported by “European truth“, the corresponding statement was published by the representative of the European Commission for foreign affairs, Peter Stano.
The representative stressed that this is another proof that the Lukashenka regime is indifferent to human rights and Belarus ignores its obligations under international law and the calls of the world community to stop repression.
“The EU reiterates its demand for immediate access to former presidential candidate Viktor Babariko, who was reportedly hospitalized after mistreatment in prison. The EU also reiterates its call for an investigation into the causes and circumstances of the death of political prisoner Vitold Ashurak on May 21, 2021,” Stano said.
On behalf of the European Union, he called for the immediate release of all political prisoners of the Lukashenka regime and stressed that the EU will work to bring to justice those involved in human rights violations in Belarus.
As Ukrainian Pravda reported, political prisoner Mykola Klimovich died in the Vitebsk colony due to heart problems. He was sentenced to a year in prison for reacting on a social network to a caricature of the self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
