EU bans AstraZeneca from exporting Covid-19 vaccine until promised deliveries to EU / Article / LSM.lv

The European Union (EU) will not allow British and Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to export its doses of Covid-19 vaccine from the EU to other countries until its promised supplies to the EU are secured, European Commission President Urzula von der Leiena said on Thursday.

“I think it is clear that the company must first (..) fulfill its contract with the European [Savienības] “Leiena told a news conference after the EU summit that dominated the EU ‘s vaccination problems.”

The EC president said about AstraZeneca threatens to deepen the dispute with the UK, which is trying to secure supplies of AstraZeneca vaccine from the EU to fill the gap that threatens the previously smooth vaccination program in the UK.

Both the EU and the UK are bidding on vaccine stocks at the AstraZeneca plant in the Netherlands.

The EC announced on Tuesday that it had decided to tighten controls on exports of Covid-19 vaccines from the EU. Officials explained that the change in the “export transparency and authorization mechanism” does not mean a total ban on exports of Covid-19 vaccines, but will make it easier for the EC to prevent exports to countries where vaccination is more rapid and produce vaccines but do not export to the EU.

This mechanism targets the United Kingdom, where vaccination against the new coronavirus is happening more rapidly than in the EU and which has imported millions of doses of vaccine from plants in the EU.

CONTEXT:

To date, four vaccines against Covid-19 have been registered in the EU by companiesBioNTech/Pfizer”, “Modern”, “AstraZeneca” and a Belgian company “Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a European subsidiary of the US pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson.
