The ambassador of the European Union to Sudan has been attacked at his home in the capital Khartoum. This was reported by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Twitter. It concerns the Irishman Aidan O’Hara. It is not clear who the perpetrators are. According to the BBC, speaking to an EU spokesperson, O’Hara is “okay”.
“This is a gross violation of the Vienna Convention,” Borrell writes. “The security of diplomatic premises and personnel is a primary responsibility of the Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law”. Borrell does not give further details.
Today was the third day in a row of heavy fighting in Sudan between the government army and the paramilitary group RSF. Heavy shelling and explosions were heard all over the country.
At least 185 people have been killed in the violence and more than 1,800 injured, according to the United Nations.
The US, UN and EU have called for a ceasefire.
