The agriculture ministers of the European Union are angry with European Commissioner Frans Timmermans. They are disturbed by his “threat” that the European Commission might withdraw the new agricultural subsidy plans, because they would not have turned green enough after the intervention of the EU countries and the European Parliament.
Timmermans, the EU’s second man in charge of climate change, was disappointed last week with the new European agricultural policy. According to him, this contributes too little to the fight against climate change, while agriculture does play an important part in this.
Member States’ ministers, who have amended the European Commission’s agricultural plans together with the European Parliament, are “extremely irritated,” said German Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner after consulting her colleagues.
Timmermans should take “democratic compromises seriously”. The agreement “to be dismissed” is “of course not good for the atmosphere in the EU and also not credible for the future,” said Klöckner.
Environmental organizations were disappointed at the agreement reached last month on how the many billions in EU agricultural subsidies will be distributed in the coming years. Farmers were mostly satisfied.
