500×600. Etty Hillesum
Next December 1, Friday, at 7:00 p.m. at the Marín Theater the 500×600 Theater play “Etty Hillesum” will be performed.
Directed by Paola Pozzo and accompanied by the piano and cello of Andreas Köning, over sixty minutes, the Madrid actress Carla Villalonga will embody the life of this young Dutch woman with a fascinating and profound Jewish tradition whose inner life, progressively conquered, will lead her to give one’s life in the Auschwitz extermination camp itself with great peace. After the completion of the staging, a dialogue can be established in the theater itself between the attendees and the actress who will play Etty.
The show has been organized by the Atrio de los Gentiles, which already last May held the Amancio Prada concert, the staging of “la Soledad Sonora” or the Harpa Dei concert (November 2022).
Ticket sales will take place at the box office on Fridays and Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. or through the website www.teatromarin.es
About the show
Ester Hillesum (Middleburg, January 15, 1914 – Auschwitz, November 30, 1943) is a young Dutch woman of Jewish tradition who has been very restless since she was a child and wonders about the meaning of everything. In 1924 the family moved to Deventer, in the east of Holland. As a young girl she goes to live in Amsterdam, where she studies Law and, later, she enrolls in the Faculty of Slavic Languages.
Etty, with a brilliant mind, has a strong existential cry that makes her very easily feel the emptiness and insufficiency of things and, at the same time, her own fragility, which she hates. But he is also passionate about everything that attracts him, trying to catch it. Thus, she lives immersed in chaos in which, despite everything, she discovers points of clarity.
Her life turns upside down when she meets her psychologist, Mr. Spier: through him, Etty, not without great sacrifices, will begin to experience a profound spiritual transformation. It is at that moment when she begins to write his diaries.
In 1942 she volunteered to go to the Westerbork deportation camp out of solidarity with other Jews: “I don’t want to escape: I want to share the fate of my people.” There, where she lives in a space of 500 x 600 meters along with 10,000 other people, she continues her inner journey, which makes her feel more and more serene and strong.
The theatrical show “Etty Hillesum 500×600” tells of this change that Etty Hillesum is experiencing during the last two years of her life. Through the work, the public will be able to enter Nazi Holland in the 1940s, but, above all, into the soul of a 27-year-old Jewish girl with all her fears, fantasies and with a hope that, instead of leaving turning off, it becomes increasingly brighter.
