The boarding school Eton College, west of London, is a well-known place for many members of the British royal family.
King Charles went there, as did Princes William and Harry. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the writer George Orwell, for example, also went to school there.
‘We are terribly sorry’
The current group of students will have to wait a while before they can return after the Christmas holidays. Due to widespread flooding in the region, the River Thames has burst its banks.
“We are terribly sorry, but the sewerage has overflowed with water from the river,” the school wrote in an email to parents obtained by foreign media. “The sewerage system at Eton College cannot currently cope with the arrival of almost 1,350 boys.”
Floods in England
Images show that sports fields around the centuries-old boarding school have been flooded. The school is offering online classes for the time being. It is not clear how long it will take before the doors can open again.
Eton is not the only British town to suffer the consequences of heavy rainfall. Thousands of people and animals have also had to leave their homes in the Nottinghamshire and Manchester regions. You can see more about that in this video:
