Palermo – The Etna volcano on the Italian island of Sicily has been spewing lava again and again since mid-December – the images of it could hardly be more spectacular and dramatic. Two days ago the news portal Euronews published additional video material showing the lava flowing down and a thick cloud of smoke at night. The volcano was awakened on the night of December 14th and spewed lava jets up to 200 meters into the air, as the national institute for geophysics and volcanology announced.
According to experts, there is no danger to the residents of the surrounding villages. According to Euronews, there are currently hardly any tourists in the area around the 3,329 meter high volcano due to the corona pandemic.
According to experts, there have been repeated eruptions in this region of the crater in recent years. Etna is located in the east of Sicily and north of the port city of Catania with more than 300,000 inhabitants. The mountain itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
