Catchy melodies and texts with rich wisdom of life – this is how the ethnographic ensemble of Baltinava characterizes its songs, which have collected in the collection songs preserved by local poets and loved by the people.

“Then, when I started singing, I listened with delight to how the old singers sang, how beautifully they sang and how rich their chest of songs was. I listened, tried to learn and memorize many of them, and always thought, what if they could save somehow?” said Antonia Thoma, singer and narrator of the ensemble.

“Basically, they are about seasons, work songs. Human life goes along with nature. This and that happen in nature, something changes in human life too. They are about marriages. Different, domestic songs,” added Antonina Krakope, head of the ethnographic ensemble of Baltinava.

The songs were collected from several singers and they were put in their little bags, listening to their family and also recording the melodies sung by the older generation.

“Many singers are dead. There are only a few singers left who could sing now. There are different endings here, for example posha says elsewhere, but we say our own. Each singer sings a little differently. Maybe one note will not be what he likes, but the other narrator does it a little differently,” admitted the singer of the ensemble, project leader Marija Bukša.

The purpose of the created collection is to preserve Latgalian lifestyle and virtues.

Native roots are particularly strengthened by the ethnographic ensemble of Baltinava, which turned 45 last year and is one of the oldest known collectives of traditions in North Latgale.

“It seems to me that this part of ours, Baltinava, followed by Upīte, Medneva, Rekova, Viļak, is a very singing part. For example, Lucija Keisha, whose whole family were musicians, sang in our ensemble. Weddings used to last three or four days. Those musicians , they also changed, for example, our songs are similar to Upīti,” Krakope said.

“It’s a unique feeling that you can sing what comes from folklore, from the people. Also the feeling that I’m singing something important that is permanent for our people, for future, young singers,” added Toma.

The creators of the collection admitted that there are still many uncollected or forgotten songs. The created collection will also be used by other collectives of traditions from the Baltinava side, such as folklore ensembles, chapels and music schools.
