Ethiopia’s PM Seeks to Alleviate Tensions with Somalia

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reassured Somalia that his country seeks peaceful relations and does not intend to cause harm. This statement follows Somalia’s accusation that Ethiopia aimed to annex a portion of its territory in order to gain access to the sea. Ethiopia recently reached a potentially divisive agreement with Somaliland, a region Somalia perceives as its own, raising concerns within Somalia. Despite Somalia’s opposition and protests, diplomatic efforts have been initiated to ease tensions and reinforce the recognition of Somalia’s sovereignty over its whole territory.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed underlined the historical connection and brotherhood between the people of Ethiopia and Somalia. He referenced Ethiopia’s role in supporting Somalia in its battle against the armed Islamist group, al-Shabab. Abiy stressed the deep and earnest friendship between the two countries and condemned the forces attempting to incite conflict. Additionally, Abiy reiterated his argument that securing sea access is essential for the region’s progress.

Internal Agreement with Somaliland

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister and Somaliland’s President, Muse Bihi Abdi, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on January 1st. Although the MoU does not represent a legally binding agreement, it symbolizes a statement of intent.

The agreement grants Ethiopia access to the sea for commercial purposes through a port located in Somaliland. Furthermore, there is a possibility of leasing a section of the coastline to Ethiopia’s navy. However, in return, Somaliland expects Ethiopia to officially acknowledge it as an independent state. At present, no confirmation has been given by Addis Ababa regarding this requirement. Somaliland, a former British protectorate, unilaterally declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 and possesses the characteristics of a functioning nation, with a functioning political system, regular elections, a police force, and an independent currency. Despite this, no country has officially recognized its independence.

Road to Peace and Stability

Recognizing the potential ramifications of the agreement’s controversy, the Ethiopian government emphasizes the paramount importance of maintaining regional peace. Discussions are underway to address Somalia’s concerns and find a diplomatic solution. Somalia, as an independent nation, is seeking to protect its territorial integrity, and Ethiopia aims to secure a pathway to the sea. Achieving a mutually beneficial arrangement that respects the sovereignty of all parties involved will be crucial in diffuse plight and to foster unity.

International Stakeholders Observe

International observers and stakeholders acknowledge the sensitivity of this regional matter and express the need to uphold Somalia’s sovereignty while also facilitating regional development. They encourage a diplomatic resolution that takes into account the interests of all parties involved.

Somali Voices and Reaction

Inside Somalia, the agreement has provoked a strong response. Many citizens have voiced their concerns and, during mass protests in Mogadishu, rallied against the deal with Ethiopia. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has declared the agreement an act of aggression and has called upon the country’s youth to be prepared for the defense of Somalia. Furthermore, he has explicitly stated that dialogue with Ethiopia is only possible if the agreement is retracted. These sentiments attest to Somalia’s dedication to safeguarding its territorial integrity while navigating a difficult and polarizing issue.
