The local government, Tigray People’s Liberation Front, also once dominated Ethiopia’s national coalition. But under the current regime of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy, they were said to be sidelined. Both governments considered each other illegal.
Ethiopia’s offensive against the Tigray region began on November 4. Prime Minister Abiy had announced from the start that he wanted to “quickly restore order in the region”. He has rejected any dialogue with the local TPLF government in this conflict.
Thousands of people are said to have died since the start of the conflict. Some 43,000 Ethiopians have fled the region’s violence to neighboring Sudan.
