Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy, Engineer Habtamu Etefa, said that the word “last” contained in Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s statement announcing the completion of the fourth filling “does not mean that the filling operations of the Renaissance Dam have stopped.”
Etefa explained, in statements reported by the official Ethiopian Fana news agency, today, that the filling operations “will continue in the coming years, and the water will pass through the lower outlets, in a way that does not cause harm to the downstream countries, Sudan and Egypt.”
He added, “The upcoming filling operations will not pass through the middle corridor, now that construction work in the middle corridor is nearing completion.”
Last Sunday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the completion of the fourth and “final” filling of the Renaissance Dam.
– Foreign Ministry’s response
For its part, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described this “unilateral” step as “a legal violation and a violation of the Declaration of Principles.”
On August 27 and 28, the Renaissance Dam meetings resumed in Cairo with the participation of official delegations from the three countries.
A statement by the spokesman for the Ministry of Irrigation stated that the negotiations did not witness a change in Ethiopian positions.
A second round of negotiations is scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa in the second half of this month.
