Selemon Barega, an Ethiopian, won the first Olympic gold in the 10,000-meter distance athletics competition in Tokyo on Friday.
Barega won the first athletics discipline in Tokyo, finishing in 27 minutes and 43.22 seconds.
He was 0.41 seconds ahead of world record holder Joshua Cheptegay of Uganda.
The chefs, who finished sixth in Rio de Janeiro five years ago, won silver in the world championship in 2017 and gold in 2019. In 2020, he reached world records of 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
21-year-old Barega sprinted perfectly in the last lap, leaving no hope for competitors in gold.
The bronze medal went to Cheptege’s teammate Jacob Kiplimo, finishing in 25 athletes in 27 minutes and 43.88 seconds.
