Selemon Barega, an Ethiopian, won the first Olympic gold in the 10,000-meter distance athletics competition in Tokyo on Friday.

Barega won the first athletics discipline in Tokyo, finishing in 27 minutes and 43.22 seconds.

He was 0.41 seconds ahead of world record holder Joshua Cheptegay of Uganda.
