Ethiopia signs a $600 million wind farm agreement with the UAE’s EMEA Power Al Khaleej newspaper

The Ethiopian Ministry of Finance said on Sunday that it had signed an agreement with the Emirati company EMEA Power to build a 300-megawatt wind farm at a cost of $600 million.

The World Bank indicates that Ethiopia, located in the Horn of Africa, is turning to the field of renewable energy to enhance the coverage of its electricity network, which included only 50 percent of the population in 2020, leaving about 60 million people without electricity.

The ministry said in a statement that the wind farm will be built on an area of 18,000 acres and will provide 2,000 job opportunities during the construction and operation phases.

EMEA Power, headquartered in Dubai, focuses on renewable energy projects across Africa, the Middle East and other emerging markets.

Ethiopia already hosts two wind energy projects in the Oromia and Tigray regions, but the Ministry of Finance said that the newest project, when completed, will be the largest wind power plant in Ethiopia. (Reuters)
