On Friday, Ethiopia declared a “state of emergency” following armed clashes in the Amhara region between the army and a local militia.
The fighting that broke out in Ethiopia’s second largest region this week between the Fanu militia and the Ethiopian National Defense Forces quickly turned into a major security crisis.
On Thursday, the Amhara government requested additional assistance from federal authorities to restore order.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office did not say in the statement it issued declaring the state of emergency whether it would be imposed only in Amhara or across the country.
The Amhara region, the second largest in Ethiopia, witnessed clashes earlier after the Amhara Special Forces units refused to hand over weapons as part of the process of integration into the official army.
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed vowed to dismantle the forces set up by some states, warning that law enforcement action would be taken against any “subversive” opposition.
