On August 1, various figures associated with Ethereum Classic (ETC) went to Twitter to inform the community of problems with the ETC blockchain. Among the first was Hudson Jameson, a member of the Ethereum Foundation, who declared that: “Exchanges must pause deposits and withdrawals.”
The page ETC Twitter officer and James Wo, founder of Ethereum Classic Labs, confirmed the problem. Soon be public a diagnostic report to explain what happened. Although the offending miner was identified, it was unclear whether it was a deliberate attack on the network.
The report added that miners should “Continue to mine the chain as is,” adding that transactions issued during the previous 12-hour period may not have been mined in the same order they were supposed to be, but they will be sent again in the mempool.
According to suggested by a mining solutions provider Bitfly, a network reorganization of 3,693 blocks has been carried out in block 10904146. According to the message: “This caused all nodes pruned by the state to stop syncing”, suggesting a 51% attack on the network.
Reorg is a feature built into a blockchain that allows the network to be reversed. However, if malicious miners secure 51% of the hashpower, they can split the network, spend twice, or delete previous transactions.
In early 2019, there was a 51% confirmed attack on ETC, which raised concerns about the Proof of Work mining model.
