Estonians sign a contract for the purchase of ten more passenger trains from Škoda

The company said that the number of train passengers has increased rapidly in recent years, so the number of trains needs to be increased. For example, last year, the number of train passengers increased by more than a million year-on-year.

The production of the ordered trains has already started, “Elron” informed.

The company explained that currently 37 train sets are used for passenger transportation, but more trains are needed to meet demand.

In 2020, “Elron” signed a contract with “Škoda” for the purchase of six electric trains, but now ten more trains have been ordered.

The new trains will have three carriages 83.18 meters long. Currently, in Estonia there are trains with four carriages 75 meters long. The new trains will have a wider entrance, more space for bicycles and baby carriages. There will also be special places for passengers in wheelchairs. All seats will be numbered and trains will have a separate area for food and drinks.

It is planned that “Škoda” will deliver the first trains to Estonia in the first three months of next year, and they will start running in December next year. By 2027, the number of “Elron” trains will increase by more than 40% from 38 to 54.
