Estonian General Staff Colonel: Russia Active in Ukraine, But Capture of Settlements Not Enough for Success

The head of the operational department of the Estonian General Staff, Colonel Tarmo Kundla, believes that Russia is now actively operating at the front in Ukraine, but the capture of several settlements will not bring it success at the operational level.

The words of Kundli are quoted by the portal ERRreports “European Truth”.

The Estonian colonel noted that Russian troops continue to advance along the entire front in Ukraine, in particular, they have advanced in villages near the city of Avdeevka to the north and from it.

“The fall of Avdiivka is possible, but it also depends on the decision of Ukraine – whether they continue to resist or retreat. The city is not cordoned off yet. If Russian troops manage to capture the city, then this is a tactical victory that is good to present to the public, but it does not give a great operational level success,” he said at a briefing on Friday at the Estonian Ministry of Defense.

Kundla noted that Russian troops could also capture the town of Marinka, south of Avdeevka, in the coming weeks. But we can hardly expect that Russia will be able to occupy more territory in the Donetsk region in the near future.

According to a representative of the Estonian General Staff, in the event of a decision to leave Avdiivka to preserve manpower, there are no significant threats to Ukraine, since it has already prepared new defensive positions to the west of the city.

“In general, the war of attrition continues, Russia has the initiative, and its units, at the cost of heavy losses, achieve tactical success on some front lines. But this does not lead to operational success,” Kundla concluded.

British intelligence previously reported that in recent weeks Ukraine has mobilized efforts to improve fortifications as moves to a more defensive position along most of the front line.
