American prosecutors have charged Estonian citizen Andrey Shevlyakov with purchasing American electronics for Russia in circumvention of sanctions, the national broadcaster reports from Tallinn today, April 6.
Back in 2012, the US authorities included Shevlyakov in the list of persons whose activities pose a threat to US national security and are contrary to the country’s foreign policy interests. In the course of the current investigation, it is established that the suspect for 10 years sent, in violation of export control regulations, electronics purchased through front companies from American manufacturers to Russia.
The businessman was arrested in Tallinn as a result of a joint operation by agents of the Houston branch of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and operatives from the Estonian Security Police. 130 kilograms of radio equipment were confiscated from the potential offender. If convicted, Shevlyakov faces up to 20 years in prison.
As previously reported EADaily in the Baltic States, the struggle against persons helping Russia to circumvent economic restrictions against it has sharply intensified.
